The Sonic Horn FAQ
Everything you need to know about The Sonic Horn, the customisable car horn that plays any sound you want. From fitting it to filling it with sound, the answers are below. Can't find yours? Email info@thesonichorn.com and a real person will help you out.
The Basics
What is The Sonic Horn?
It's a fully customisable car horn that plays whatever sound you want. You load up to four of your own sounds onto it, and a wireless remote lets you fire them off whenever you feel like it. Mount it in your engine bay, and your car suddenly has a voice. That's the whole idea behind The Sonic Horn.
So it's not just another loud horn?
Nope. Most aftermarket car horns give you one sound and that's your lot. A train horn forever. A Dixie tune forever. The Sonic Horn is a programmable horn that lets you put your own custom sounds on it and swap them whenever you want. Want a movie quote today and a goat tomorrow? Go for it. You're in charge, not us.
What kind of sounds can it play?
Pretty much any sound you can save as an audio file. Music drops, movie quotes, sirens, air horns, sound effects, animal noises, your own voice, a custom jingle. If it plays through a speaker, it'll play through The Sonic Horn. That's what makes it a proper custom car horn rather than a one-trick novelty.
How loud is it?
130 decibels, which makes it one seriously loud car horn. Your factory horn does about 110. That might not sound like a big jump on paper, but decibels aren't linear, so in the real world it's a serious difference. People will hear you. That's kind of the point.
Does it replace my normal horn?
Not at all. Your factory horn keeps working exactly like it always has. The Sonic Horn sits alongside it as a second horn, wired on its own and triggered only by the wireless remote. Nothing about your standard setup changes.
Will It Fit My Ride?
What vehicles is it compatible with?
Pretty much anything with a 12-volt battery. Cars, trucks, utes, vans, SUVs, boats, RVs, ATVs, golf carts, motorbikes. If it runs on 12 volts, this custom car horn will work on it.
Will it work on my Jeep, truck or golf cart?
Yes, and honestly those are some of our favourite builds. A wireless car horn is a real bonus on a lifted truck or a Jeep, because you're not fishing a wire through the firewall to a button. You mount the horn, hook it to power, and the remote does the rest. Golf carts and side-by-sides are easy too.
What about an EV or a Tesla?
Works fine. Every mainstream electric car, Tesla included, still has a normal 12-volt battery tucked away for accessories like this. You connect to that, same as you would on a petrol car.
Can I use it on a boat?
You can. Just mount the speaker somewhere it won't be sitting underwater. It shrugs off rain and spray no problem, but it's not built to be fully dunked.
Fitting It
Is it hard to install?
Not really. Installing this car horn is about as simple as it gets. You mount the horn in the engine bay, run two wires to your 12-volt battery (positive and negative), pair the remote, and you're done. Most people have it sorted in well under half an hour. There's no cutting into your existing wiring and nothing permanent.
Do I need a mechanic?
If you've ever connected a set of jumper cables, you can install it yourself. We include a guide in the box and there's a quick how-to video on our site that walks you through it.
What comes in the box?
The horn unit, the wireless remote, the mounting hardware, a USB cable for loading your sounds, and the instructions. Everything you need is in there. You won't have to go buy anything extra to get started.
Will fitting it void my car warranty?
It shouldn't. Because this car horn only connects to your battery and doesn't touch your car's actual wiring or computer, it's treated like any other bolt-on accessory. Your manufacturer warranty isn't affected by adding something that runs independently like this. If you ever want total peace of mind, any auto electrician can check the install in fifteen minutes for next to nothing.
The Fun Part: Your Sounds
How do I upload my own sounds?
Plug the horn into your computer with the USB cable and it shows up just like a memory stick. Drag up to four MP3 or WAV files onto it, one for each button on the remote. Eject it, reconnect it to your car, and you're ready to roll. Loading custom sounds takes a couple of minutes, tops.
What audio formats does it support?
MP3 and WAV, both of which work on Windows and Mac. If your sound is in some other format, a free tool like Audacity or any online converter will sort it out in seconds.
How many sounds can I have loaded at once?
Four at a time, one per button on the wireless remote. And you can change them as often as you like. Plenty of people keep a folder of favourites on their computer and rotate them whenever the mood takes them.
Where do people find good horn sounds?
Honestly, anywhere you can grab audio. Plenty of folks pull clips from YouTube, others use free sound libraries, and some just record their own straight off their phone. We've also got a Sound Clips page on the site full of ready-to-go custom car horn sounds if you'd rather skip the hunting.
Can I record my own custom sound?
Absolutely, and those are usually the best ones. Record it on your phone, save it as an MP3, load it up. We've seen people use their own voice, their dog, a mate yelling something ridiculous. If you can record it, you can honk it.
Getting It To You
Where do you ship?
All over the world. Wherever you are, you'll see your options and pricing at checkout.
How much is shipping and how long does it take?
Standard shipping is free, and usually lands in about 10 to 14 business days. If you're in a hurry, express is a flat $19.99 USD and typically gets there in 5 to 12 business days. We get orders out the door within 2 to 3 business days of you placing them.
Can I track my order?
Yes. As soon as your order ships, we'll email you a tracking number. It usually goes live within 24 hours, so give it a day before you start refreshing it.
What about customs or import fees?
If your country charges duties or taxes on the way in, those are down to you rather than us, same as with most things shipped internationally. Worth a quick check on your local rules if you're outside Australia so there are no surprises.
Returns & Peace Of Mind
What if I change my mind?
You've got 30 days from when it arrives to send it back. It just needs to be in the same condition you got it, in its original packaging, with your proof of purchase. Email us to kick things off and we'll sort out the return with you from there.
What if it turns up damaged or faulty?
Let us know straight away and we'll make it right. Have a quick look at your order when it lands, and if anything's defective, damaged, or just plain wrong, get in touch and we'll fix it. That's not negotiable for us, we want you happy with what you got.
How do refunds work?
Once your return gets back to us and we've checked it over, we'll let you know it's approved and put the refund back on your original payment method. Bear in mind your bank can take a little while on their end to actually show it.
How do I start a return or ask a question?
Just email us at info@thesonichorn.com. A real person reads it and we'll get back to you. No bots, no runaround.
Keeping It Sensible
Is a custom car horn legal to use?
The Sonic Horn is a novelty car horn, not a replacement for the proper one your car came with, and your factory horn keeps doing its job. Rules around extra horns vary a bit depending on where you live, so the short version is: keep your standard horn working, and use this one with a bit of common sense. It's built for fun, so have fun with it, just don't be that person.
Is it safe to mount near my engine?
Yes, that's exactly where it's designed to live. It handles the heat, the bumps and the weather you'd expect under the bonnet. Just keep it off anything that gets seriously hot like the exhaust manifold, and bolt it down properly with the hardware we give you.
Your Car…… Your Sound.
